In 1991, Kentaro Maruyama opened the first Maruyama Coffee café in Karuizawa, a resort town in Nagano Prefecture. Ever since, we’ve built a strong and loyal base of customers in the local community and across Japan.
Kentaro Maruyama is a leading figure in the coffee community. Every year, international tasting competitions convene in coffee-growing countries around the world. Kentaro Maruyama has served on the international juries more than any other judges. Kentaro has also been spending roughly six months out of every year trotting the globe, purchasing top-notch beans selected by himself since the early 2000’s. The focus is on distinctive, high-quality beans, which he purchases directly from growers. Once the beans make their way to Japan, we use our proprietary roasting techniques to turn the raw materials into finished products that retain their inherent charms and deliver rich, flavorful coffee experiences. We started buying coffee beans directly from growers in 2001. As we’ve forged relationships with more and more farmers, we’ve been able to serve better and better coffee to our customers.
