In 1991, Kentaro Maruyama opened the first Maruyama Coffee location in Karuizawa, a resort town in Nagano Prefecture. Ever since, we’ve built a strong, loyal base of customers in the local community and across Japan.
Kentaro Maruyama is a leading figure in the coffee world. Every year, international tasting competitions convene in coffee-growing countries around the world—and no other coffee expert has received more invitations to serve on those judging panels than Kentaro has. He also spends roughly six months out of the year trotting the globe to purchase top-notch beans—which he selects himself—via his ever-expanding personal network. The focus is on distinctive, high-quality beans, which he purchases directly from growers. Once the beans make their way to Japan, we use our unique roasting techniques to turn the raw materials into finished products that retain their inherent charms and deliver rich, flavorful coffee experiences. From wholesalers to individual customers across Japan, people keep coming back to Maruyama Coffee for what they know they can expect: extraordinary coffee, done the right way. We started buying coffee beans directly from growers in 2001. As we’ve forged relationships with more and more farmers, we’ve been able to serve better and better coffee to our customers.
